Frequently Asked Questions
IS FOREST FRIENDLY TIMBER USED?
We make every effort to ensure that all our doors and raw lumber suppliers claim they purchase from Managed Forest sources and we especially support those where replanting programs are employed.
Some species of timber have a restricted cutting allocation per annum and it is therefore possible that we may offer a product in an alternative timber which you would really prefer.
It is very rare that we will use species such as Brazilian Mahogany, Luzon, Luaun or English Oak in our productions.
We donate as much of our Used Paper & Cardboard for Recycling as is practical.
For more information On Engineered Doors See The Modern Methods Page.
WHAT ARE RAISED MOULDINGS?
Raised Mouldings are a separately carved or machined beading fixed to the face of a door.
This is normally applied around the Fielded Panels and Glass Openings.
Raised Mouldings give the door a great deal of character and visual depth.
WHAT IS DOWEL CONSTRUCTION?
Dowel construction doors are made of separate components i.e. Stiles, Head Rail, Mid Rails, Bottom Rails etc.
The main components are joined by Bore Holes and Fluted Dowels which are glued and inserted into the dowel holes. The door is then pressed by hydraulic or pneumatic press to complete its assembly. This method is employed to assemble ‘Economical’ exterior doors and almost always to assemble interior doors.
Further Information is in the Useful Door Data pages.
WHAT IS MORTICE & TENON CONSTRUCTION?
Mortice & Tenon refers to the main joints of two pieces of wood.
A Mortice & Tenon Joint basically means that two pieces of wood are joined by carving a tenon peg on one piece of wood and boring a mortice hole in another. The tenon is then glued and passed through the mortice hole, it is glued and wedged in place to secure a firm joint.
This is a well proven way of joining two pieces of wood together and has been employed since man kind invented joinery.
A Mortice & Tenon construction is therefore superior to a dowel built exterior door in withstanding the climate.
NOTE: Most modern interior doors are built with dowel construction as they are not exposed to severe weather conditions and Dowel Joints are therefore adequate.
Further Information is in the Useful Door Data Page.
ARE YOUR DOORS SOLID OAK, ASH, PINE, HARDWOOD?
While 99% of our doors are solid this does not normally mean that they are solid oak, ash, pine, hardwood etc.
It is quite normal & standard practice for doors to be made from engineered components.
This means that the doors will be a veneer of oak, ash, pine etc. over a composite core.
Making doors this way gives a much more stable construction being less susceptible to problems that solid timber components have such as twisting & bowing.
Other benefits of making doors this way are:
- Kinder to forests
- Much more cost effective
More detailed information can be found at Modern Methods.
CAN MY DOOR BE PAINTED, STAINED, OILED OR WAXED?
Internal Doors
All types of internal doors can be treated with paint or varnish type finishes. Some types such as the oak engineered internal doors may be treated with Danish Oil or similar. Be sure to apply ample coats to a new door and fresh coats periodically.
Do not use waterbased products. This will cause adverse effects to your doors and void your warranty.
External Doors – Paint
External doors, frames and panels may be treated with exterior quality paint. A primer coat, 2 undercoats and 2 gloss coats are recommended. Be sure to seal both the top edge and bottom edge underneath to prevent moisture entering the timber.
External Doors – Stain or Varnish
External Doors, frames and panels may be treated with a spirit based micro-porous treatment of quality exterior grade. A pre-dec coat and four top coats are recommended. Be sure to seal both the top edge and bottom edge underneath the door to prevent moisture entering the timber. A pigmented treatment should be used to protect the timber from ultraviolet rays. Clear varnish alone is not sufficient to protect the timber.
NEVER use a water based product on your new external doors, frames, panels etc. We do not consider these to give adequate protection and no guarantee claim will be entertained for goods treated with such products.
Any guidance given here does NOT overrule guidance given by specific manufacturers. Where a manufacturer has specific guidelines these will be shown and MUST BE adhered to. Failure to follow these guidelines WILL void your warranty.
HOW SHOULD I POLISH/STAIN/VARNISH MY DOORS?
We recommend is that your doors should be treated with a micro-porous stain or varnish, something with a hard finish.
We recommend that you DO NOT use waxes or oils. While these may be fine for internal doors we feel that they offer no where near enough protection from the elements & we will not guarantee external doors at all if they have been finished in this way.
The same applies to water based stains as our past experience has shown that these are not as durable as oil based.
Using a water based stain will void your warranty.
Any guidance given here does NOT overrule guidance given by specific manufacturers. Where a manufacturer has specific guidelines these will be shown and MUST BE adhered to. Failure to follow these guidelines WILL void your warranty.

DO I MEASURE IN INCHES OR MILLIMETRES?
Most domestic properties in U.K. use Imperial size doors (78”x27” or 78”x30” etc.).
Some properties built in recent years do have Metric sized doors.
Our doors are listed using Imperial sizes and Metric sizes where appropriate.
For a Guide an approximate CONVERSION TABLE can be found the Useful Door Data pages that covers the most common sizes of the products we market.
There is also a switch located underneath the menu bar on product every page, allowing you to view sizes in either metric or imperial measurments.
DO YOU HAVE A FITTING SERVICE?
SORRY WE DO NOT offer a fitting service but will endeavour to supply all the goods you need for your new doors, windows, etc.
HOW DO I FIT MY DOOR?
This is best left to a competent joiner or carpenter but you may find the tutorial at http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-hang-a-door helpful. Please note that this is an external website and we are not responsible nor will be held liable for any content.
DO YOU HAVE A SHOWROOM?
YES we have a showroom at the above address.
Browse around at your leisure, there are no pushy salesmen.
Please note that not all products on site are in stock or on display. Our range is very comprehensive and not all doors are stock items. If you wish to view a particular item, please do not hesitate to call first to ensure the item you want to look at is in stock or an example is available.
CAN YOU CUT MY DOOR TO…?
We do not have a cut to size service. Dressing the door in to suit your frame really needs to be done on site by your installer to suit the frame.
In the case of new frames being supplied by us as well as doors and/or standard side panels we will not trim the door(s)/panel(s) to fit the frame. Again this must be done by your installer.
Custom made doors/panels are usually made a couple of millimetres larger than requested to allow the fitter to dress them off for a perfect fit.
